What’s Coming to SWGOH in 2020/2021?

Scotty McLaren Reports on the Future of SWGOH

2019 had a few things going for it in terms of big Star Wars releases. We saw a new Thrawn: Treason, the Vader comics went back to their roots, The Mandalorian knocked it outside of the park, we celebrated the 20th Anniversary of The Phantom Menace at a whimper and the final movie in the Disney Star Wars era with The Rise Of Skywalker

2020 however will be much bigger in terms of content and what that could mean for Star Wars Galaxy Of Heroes going forward. Below are some key dates and some speculation as to what could be coming in 2020.

Rise Of The Resistance Opens At Disney Land – February 2020

Rise of the Resistance

This will likely coincide with the new Poe Dameron coming to the game, Supreme Leader Kylo Ren and the new version of Rey coming to the game. We will also likely see General Hux get his Capital Ship alongside Holdo getting hers for the Resistance. Other ship possibilities include the First Order Sith Trooper and another version of Poe’s X-Wing. This would probably be a good opportunity for Capital Games to add Maz Kanata, Lieutenant Konnix, a new Emperor Palpatine, and the First Order Flametrooper to the game.

Also, with Captain Phasma being on the opening screen, I wouldn’t rule out a rework for her to make her work better with General Hux. Let’s hope so, but one thing’s for sure this content will likely wrap mid-February.

Clone Wars Season 7 – Commences February 17 on Disney Plus

  • SWGOH Heavy
  • Pre Vizsla
  • Satine Kryze
  • Admiral Trench
  • Saesee Tiin
  • Bo Katan-Kryze
  • The Hondo Ohnaka

Now that the sequel trilogy is all done and dusted, this is a brilliant opportunity for Capital Games to finish what they started with the Clone Wars content. Sure we could use some more Clones, but that is unlikely considering General Skywalker dominating the Meta. This is the time for Capital Games to introduce TWO factions to the game. Mandalorians and Pirates.

With Mandalorians, we would likely see Pre Vizsla, Bo-Katarn Kryze and Satine Kryze come to the game. This could prompt Gar Saxon and Imperial Super Commando getting their rework to fit in with this faction. Down the track in 2020 Sabine Wren would also get the Mandalorian tag. This would be a good start for Mandalorian content in November.

The other faction is pirates. In some events, we have already seen the likes of Pirates like Pirate Leader, Pirate Brood, etc in the game, but the key to the Pirates is Hondo Onaka. Warrior also speculated on The Escape Pod Cast recently that the Pirate faction would come to the game in 2020. CG Carrie also confirmed that they were working on Hondo before she left. This has been talked about for some time and Capital Games need to bring them into the game sooner rather than later.

Capital Games has also remained coy on the fact that the Light Side Geonosis Territory Battle is “working as intended”. If this is the case, then we can expect significant reworks to several Jedi early in 2020. Mace Windu, immediately springs to mind here. We do know that Ki Adi Mundi will make Jedi better when you finally unlock him, however until then Ima Gun-Di, Kit Fisto, Luminara Unduli and Eeth Koth could certainly use some love. Don’t rule out a Jedi Rework as the first of many in 2020.

Star Wars Jedi Temple Challenge – commences mid-2020 Disney Plus

Jedi Temple Challenge

“The various challenges will test a Padawan’s connection to the Force in three locations — a forest planet, onboard a Jedi star cruiser, and inside a Jedi temple — immersing them and the audience in a fun, humorous, and exciting competition”.

Ahmed Best the actor who played Jar Jar Binks is in for a huge 2020. It’s been confirmed that he will be reprising his role in the upcoming Kenobi TV show. Until then, he will be the host of a new Game Show on Disney Plus called Jedi Temple Challenge. LucasFilm said that “The various challenges will test a Padawan’s connection to the Force in three locations — a forest planet, onboard a Jedi star cruiser, and inside a Jedi temple — immersing them and the audience in a fun, humorous, and exciting competition”.

Ahmed Best confirmed his hosting role in a Tweet saying “In my most challenging times, it was always the smiles and energy of kids that loved #jarjarbjnks who lifted me up,” he wrote. “ Thank you for this opportunity to give back to them”. So could 2020 be the year Jar Jar finally gets introduced mid-year? Don’t rule it out as we have C3PO, Wat Tambor, and a few others we never thought we would see. Star Wars Jedi Temple Challenge launches mid-year on Disney Plus.

Star Wars Resistance Season 2 And Conclusion – October 6 – Disney Plus

Ok sure, Resistance didn’t perform so well when it was on Disney XD. However, it has now found a new audience with it included on Disney Plus. It took until the second season of Rebels to bring those characters into the game, so don’t be surprised if around October we see several marquee characters come to the game. This could coincide with the Phasma rework we mentioned earlier. Resistance concludes from October 6.

Mandalorian Season 2 – November on Disney Plus

This is the content we know you all want to come to the game, but you may just have to wait until November to see it. The Mandalorian, The Child, Greef Carga, Cara Dune, Kuiill, IG-11, Scout Troopers, Trapper Wolf, Moff Gideon, and so many others could make their way into SWGOH to see out 2020 at the end of the year. This would also tie in nicely with the Mandalorian tag introduced earlier in the year. If Capital Games are smart, this would be the ultimate way to close 2020.

There are also rumors that Ahsoka could cameo in Season 2 of The Mandalorian. This would obviously deviate from the animated shows because it would be her first live-action appearance. However, the storylines could definitely overlap here. A Mandalorian and Child Epic confrontation is the way. I have spoken.

Cassian Andor Series – 2021 on Disney Plus

2021 will see a return to the Rogue One universe with Cassian Andor. K2-SO will also return to the Star Wars universe in this Disney Plus show. We don’t know much about this series yet, but what we do know is that George Lucas is back producing an episode of the show. This could finally mean Saw Guerra could finally land within the game alongside Mon Mothma, Bail Organa and Admiral Raddus of whom didn’t make it into the game when Rogue One first came out alongside new characters. It could also provide significant reworks to these characters to make them better. Bodhi Rook anyone? A pilot who has no ship? Watch this space.

Kenobi Series – 2021 on Disney Plus

Ewen McGregor returns as the title character for Kenobi which will commence filming this year. We also know that Ahmed Best will be back to play Jar Jar Binks in the series. Not much more is known at this point, however, we can expect some more Galactic Republic love when this series gets rolled out. It could also mean the Jawas, Qui Gon Jinn, and Tuskens might get the love that they finally deserve. Watch this space.

Heavily Rumoured

Now we have gone through all of the confirmed properties, let’s take a look at what’s been heavily rumored in the Star Wars Universe.

Star Wars Rebels:- The Return – 2020 Disney Plus

Disney and LucasFilm have put in a lot of money recently into their animated departments and they will be teaming up with Marvel on a lot of animated television shows in the future. However, before they do it’s been widely speculated since the end of Star Wars Rebels that we would return to this universe before too long to see what Sabine and Ahsoka have been up to in trying to find Ezra Bridger.

According to the YouTube channel Kessel Run Transmissions’ sources, they report that Lucasfilm is creating a sequel series to Star Wars Rebels, which originally aired on DisneyXD from 2014-2018. They said their sources report that the show is already in development, tentatively set for a 2020 release date. It’ll have a different name; this isn’t a Season 5 of Rebels, but a whole new show set after the first series. The animation is also reportedly going to be different; whether that means it’ll look like The Clone Wars Season 7 or something else is unknown. It’s the logical way to go, and after Clone Wars the final season, why not give us more Rebels?

From a game perspective, there are so many characters we would want to see come to the game. Agent Kallus, Grand Inquisitor, Fifth Brother, Seventh Sister, Rukh, Governor Pryce, AP-5, Captain Gregor, Commander Wolffe, Fenn Rau, Ketsu Onyo, Vizargo, and Admiral Konstantine to name a few. This would be the perfect opportunity to bring them in. It could also provide Ahsoka Fulcrum the much needed Phoenix tag. Fingers crossed.

Doctor Aphra Animated Series – 2021 Disney Plus

It’s been confirmed that Marvel Studios and LucasFilm will be bringing Doctor Aphra to life. According to MakingStarWars’ Jason Ward (via Inverse), “a new Star Wars show is starting about now that nobody even knows about…I’m hearing it’s a Lucasfilm-Marvel venture with both companies teaming up to bring a Star Wars show to the small screen.”

There are two animated series in the works, which have been confirmed by LucasFilm. While most would want Aphra to come as live-action, it’s highly likely she will come as the second “in development secret Animated Series” as speculated here by Jeremy Conrad.

While it would seem very unlikely that a Star Wars series – never mind produced by both Lucasfilm and Marvel – could make it anywhere near the production stage without word reaching the trades, Ward and MakingStarWars do have a solid enough track record that the info could very well be legit. And, if it is indeed close to starting, we shouldn’t have too long to wait before we get some official confirmation.

There are a plethora of characters that could come to the game from Doctor Aphra. So watch this space

Untitled Star Wars Movie December 16, 2022

The future of Star Wars involves a massive publishing project announced at the 2019 Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, called Project Luminous. This initiative brings together Disney, Lucasfilm, Del Rey, IDW Publishing, and Marvel for interconnecting novels, stories, and comics, according to two sources: Hungarian fansite Ziro and Making Star Wars. Further leaks indicate that Project Luminous is not just Star Wars books. It is also a new path for Star Wars movies, which is more similar to the Marvel Studios approach.

“As far as we know, these stories would be separate, but also connected, similar to the MCU,” explained informants on the Hungarian fansite, Ziro. “The more one would see, the more it could be enjoyed, with the different plots culminating in the style of the Avengers movies.”

These stories are going to take place about 400 years before the events in the Skywalker Saga, in the High Republic. The Game of Thrones creators, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, originally began work on this era, until they left Lucasfilm.

One of the storylines follows a group of Jedi exploring the galaxy. They travel to Unknown regions where the Sith planet of Exegol was found in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. This leading group of Jedi is said to have varying strengths and powers, similar to superheroes. It will Star a 500-year-old Yoda and that is all we know so far. Don’t be surprised if Revan makes an appearance one way or another.

In addition to the 2022 movie, various books, and comics, Star Wars will also be releasing a video game set in the High Republic era. More information will follow when Lucasfilm makes its announcement in late January 2020.

SIGNIFICANT ANNIVERSARIES

Before we finish we need to take a look at some of the significant anniversaries that are coming to Star Wars in the next few years. There is a big one coming in August of 2020. So let’s get to that.

August 7, 2020, marks the 40th Anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back

There has been a Youtuber calling for an Empire rework ever since he got his Grievous rework. This will be the year for it, as August 7 we celebrate 40 years of the greatest movie of all time The Empire Strikes Back. It could also mean we get reworks for our Hoth Scout and Hoth Trooper and Rebel Officer Leia Organa to make them more viable in something like the Light Side Geonosis Territory Battle. Lobot could also get some love. Jabba the Hutt could also finally make his debut to mark this anniversary, alongside 4-LOM and Zuckass. There are so many things Capital Games could do with this Anniversary and let’s hope we see some cool things.

May 19, 2020, marks the 15th Anniversary of Revenge Of The Sith

As we will already be in the midst of Clone Wars content, this is a significant anniversary for Capital Games to celebrate. We could execute Order 66 with Clones destroying Jedi in a special event for Jar Jar Binks shards. That would be cool. We could also see a Dark Side Anakin make his way into the game to celebrate this anniversary as an Epic Confrontation. So many cool things could be added to Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes surrounding the Revenge of the Sith’s 15th anniversary. Let’s hope Capital Games doesn’t let this opportunity pass them by.

December 16, 2020, marks the 5th Anniversary Of The Force Awakens

Now, this would be epic. What a way to close 2020 with where it began? Celebrating 5 years of The Force Awakens alongside Mandalorian content? This would be the biggest and smartest play that Capital Games could play to close out the year with several marquees (mentioned earlier) to tie up those loose ends from the Skywalker saga. Fingers crossed on this one.

December 15, 2021 marks the 5th Anniversary Of Rogue One

As reported earlier, it’s going to be a massive year for Rogue One next year with the new Cassian show making its way to Disney Plus. What you might not know is that in December of 2021 it will make the 5th Anniversary of Rogue One. This could be the reworks to tie in with Cassian. Let’s hope so.

IN CONCLUSION

There are so many cool things that Capital Games could do in 2020/2021. The above indicates all the properties that they could turn into some pretty epic content coming our way in terms of characters and ships. Capital Games would be mad to let these opportunities pass them by. Fingers crossed we see it, and more new playable content in the future.
