SWGOH Packs and Bundles: Is it worth it?

The Rise Together event brought us new ships and an opportunity to begin farming them. The Ghost and Phantom II from the Star Wars Rebels TV show are the newest light side ships available to all holotable heroes. If you complete each stage of the Rise Together event, you we be able to unlock both ships at 3 stars and 25 out of 30 ship blueprints. But this isn’t the only place where players can farm these new additions. Players can also find both ships and the crew members who pilot those ships available in the packs and bundles located in the game’s Store. The question then becomes, are packs and bundles worth it?

Farming Problems

If you’re interested in farming these new pieces, then you’re going to have to wait at least three months before they are available. All new pieces go through a release process. The initial event allows players to begin farming characters, usually limiting the progress that can be made on leveling them up. After a time, new pieces will then be moved to Chromium packs, which are again located in the Store. These packs cost 350 crystals but deliver no guarantee of the piece you want. Eventually, the new shards and blueprints make their way to various locations in the different game modes. Until then, ships and shards rest behind the pay wall.

Breaching the Pay Wall

Currently, there are over 10 million players enjoying the strategy of the holotables in Galaxy of Heroes. These players divide into Free-to-play (FTP) and Pay-to-play players (PTP). FTP players spend little to no money on the game, while PTP players will invest hundreds or even thousands of dollars into the game. So how can you, as FTP players, compete with the PTP whales that dominate the tables? If you’re willing, you can invest your money wisely.

You may be hesitant to spend money on a mobile game. But I’ll tell you a secret: it only hurts the first time…or unless you waste your money. So you have to know where to put your money. For my full guide on investing in SWGOH, check out my SWGOH Farming Guide.

Packs vs. Bundles

When you spend your money, you want to get the biggest bang for your buck. The biggest difference between packs and bundles is the amount of guaranteed shards or blueprints. Packs will have a sliding scale of between 5 and 30 shards or blueprints (with the exception of the fleet megapack which has between 5-100). Bundles guarantee a certain number of shards or blueprints, usually 25 or 30.

Since downloadable content is what keeps this game running, it’s not likely that you will receive the highest number of shards or blueprints when you purchase a pack. So if you are farming for characters or ships, then it’s more effective to buy the bundles. Packs and bundles cost roughly the same amount, between 8.50ish and 9.99 with tax.

The nice thing about character or ship specific packs is that you don’t often run the risk of getting shards or blueprints you don’t need. Sometimes, EA will do a mega pack or bundle which will have both shards and blueprints, along with other items or credits. These usually cost more money, but often come with enough materials to completely unlock the character and ship in question.

Conclusion

If you are going to spend money on anything in this game, I advise you spend it on crystals. The more crystals you have the more effectively you can farm the characters you want. But if you want to get a leg up on farming for characters and ships who won’t be available for a few months, then buying the bundles is the way to go. REMEMBER: You have to have the pilot of the ship activated before you can activate the ship in questions. Keep that in mind if you are thinking about buying ships blueprints.

I think EA is going to increase the rate at which they offer character shards and ship blueprints. Do you agree with my analysis of packs and bundles? Have you bought any packs or bundles? What did you think of the cost or value of what you purchased? Leave a comment in the section below and let’s talk about it.
