Ghostbusters 3 to Reboot the Franchise

Can Jason Reitman Bring Honor Back to his Father’s Franchise?

Hours ago, Director Jason Reitman announced that he plans to bring his father’s vision back to the big screen. Ghostbusters 3, the official sequel to the Ivan Reitman’s original duology premieres in the summer of 2020. It’s not yet known whether or not the surviving members of the original cast (Harold Ramis passed away in 2014) will be part of the new film.

Here’s my original reaction to the news.

Reitman faces an uphill battle for the movie. Original fans of the duology disliked the 2016 attemped reboot. Melissa McCarthy and company just lacked comedic chops to reboot the film and most audiences left unsatisfied. Today, the 2016 reboot boasts an audience score of 51 percent fresh, which seems high.

I would like to point out that while I liked aspects of the 2016, McCarthy, Johns, and Wiig were actually convincing in the film, most of movie was just not good. Kate McKinnon’s over the top performance seemed awkward at best. But it was the final dance number that really pulled me out of the movie.

It was aaaawkward.

Reitman has the chance to bring glory back to the franchise and garner a new generation of fans. Until we learn more, we just have to collectively hope that as much of the original cast returns for Ghostbusters 3 as possible.
