DC TV Shows on the CW Recap for 2/20-2/22

This week in the Arrowverse, plots are developed, and stories are advanced. A magical imp, in love with Kara, causes trouble in Supergirl, when Kara doesn’t reciprocate his feelings. When The Legends of tomorrow go looking for the spear of Destiny, they encounter Star Girl who is guarding a piece of it. On Arrow, Oliver has to deal with a collection of three old enemies who have escaped prison.

Important Things to Know This Week:

Last week, Supergirl chose to be accepting of James and Winn’s decision to continue being Guardian. We should also keep in mind that Lena Luthor had a life-changing moment last week, and will likely have to make a decision soon about what side of the conflict she should be on. Lastly, we saw Mon-El and Kara come close to connecting romantically.

Stay tuned next week for a special recap on the two-part “Gorilla City” event happening on “The Flash”

It has felt like an incredibly long time since we watched the Legends hanging out with George Washington during the Revolutionary War. We should keep in mind the fact that Rip Hunter is now actually working with the Legion of Doom.

Last week, we saw Oliver deal with a mayoral issue after a shooter attacked his office. I theorized that we would see more of this part of Oliver’s life. Hopefully, we will see more of that in this episode.

The Biggest Moments This Week (Spoilers!):

Supergirl: (S2 E13: Mr. & Mrs. Mxyzptlk)

Mr Mxyzptlk is quite possibly the most annoying character in the short history of this show, and this show had Maxwell Lord in 14 episodes last season. Watching Mon-El get jealous of him is also really annoying. I feel bad for Kara, honestly. It’s bad enough that she has to deal with “Mxy” causing trouble to impress her, but having to add Mon-El’s problems to the equation is the opposite of what she needs.

Winn’s story is fun to watch this week. We don’t get to see much of his personal life if it isn’t explicitly tied to one of the other main characters. Of course, the show does have a lot of stories to cover, so it makes sense. Getting a break from that was a fun addition to an otherwise “filler” Valentine’s Day themed episode.

Alex and Maggie definitely have the most interesting story of the week, though. It’s easy to feel bad for Alex at first, when Maggie tells her that she hates Valentine’s Day. Everything changes, though, when Maggie reveals why she doesn’t like Valentine’s Day. It’s a heartbreaking story about when Maggie was outed, and it leads to a reveal that shows how much Maggie cares about Alex. This is one of the better TV relationships I have seen recently, so I’m glad they are striving.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: (S2 E12: Camelot/3000)

Having members of the JSA be guardians of the spear of destiny is a very interesting way to intertwine Amaya’s story, and the presence of the JSA from early on in the season. It makes absolute sense that Rip Hunter would have worked with their group to keep the world safe from the Spear of Destiny.

Watching Rip embrace the Villain role as he works closely with the Legion of Doom is definitely disappointing. He was one of my favorite parts of this show back in Season 1, and I was hoping, when he rejoined the cast, that he would be a key addition to the Legends’ fight. The hardest part about watching him here is that he isn’t being forced. He is doing everything by his own choice. Even worse is the fact that he can actually remember the earlier parts of his life. I still have hope that Rip will turn things around, but it’s not looking good.

The final sequences, like always with Legends, are the best part of this episode. I don’t know why Ray decided that he needed to fight in the battle, and it was honestly really stupid. The fact that the team got behind him, and helped, though, even when they didn’t agree with him, is part of what makes this show great. Adding to that, the way that Mick was able to overcome the mind control Rip had on the soldiers was absolutely awesome! I look forward to more of that when the show comes back in two weeks.

Arrow: (S5 E14: The Sin-Eater)

Susan Williams digging around about Oliver being the Green Arrow is beyond annoying. Ideally, Oliver would have re-evaluated his relationship, or cut it off completely. The fact that Thea is smart enough to go to Felicity proves that, even though Oliver has grown up, he can still be easily blindsided by women and romance. I’m glad that Thea and Felicity did what they could to discredit her. Oliver may be upset, but they made the right choice. There are bad people in this show, and Susan was definitely forming into one of them.

This week’s main story about the three prison escapees, is definitely fun to watch. All three of these women made compelling villains in their own rights, so putting them together is extremely compelling. I didn’t anticipate that Oliver would be targeted by the ACU. The possibility, of course, was always there, but it was still unexpected. It is also nice to see Thea help Lance realize that he shouldn’t feel responsible for the whole situation. The great part about this story is that it perfectly blends Oliver’s lives as both the Mayor and as the Green Arrow.

I love that the show brings back a heavy amount of flashbacks from Russia. It is a great way to reconnect to what made the early seasons so strong. I realized though, that moving away from the flashback sequences has been a good move. Moving forward, there won’t be flashback sequences left, unless they can find unexplained things from the earlier seasons. That isn’t a great idea, and I know I don’t want the show to end. Proving that it can stand on a singular storyline is great for the future of Arrow.

Overall:

Outside of Supergirl, this week was great for advancing plots. We are getting to the point in each show’s season where final story-arcs are going to begin. With that, we generally have seen a lot of crossover potential. We also see a lot of the best episodes of the seasons in these final acts. I think this week showed the potential for what we will see in the next few months.

Ryan’s Speculation of the week:

Legends of Tomorrow is going to be exciting moving forward. The show will take next week off, next Tuesday, but when it returns, there is still another fragment of the Spear of Destiny. One of the members of the JSA is likely to have it, and, based on who we have seen so far, it will most likely be Nate’s grandfather. The last encounter between him and the Legends was rocky at best, so I’m interested in seeing what the next encounter will be like.

Supergirl airs on Mondays, The Flash & Legends of Tomorrow air on Tuesdays, and Arrow airs on Wednesdays on the CW. Leave a comment and let me know what you thought about this week’s slate of episodes.
