Marvel Avengers: Endgame Review

There is a reason why Avengers: Endgame boasts the highest grossing opening weekend in cinematic history: the movie is awesome! After a decade of films depicting the heroes of Marvel, we get the end to the what the MCU has been building to for the last 10 years. This tapestry of stories which finishes with Avengers: Endgame paid off at the box office, but more importantly, it paid off as a story.

A Decade-Long Investment

From the moment when Tony Stark became Iron Man until Captain Marvel, each story adds to the overall development of the universe. Each installment not only pushed the overall narrative along but also developed the characters in a way that allowed audiences to like and eventually fall in love with each hero. It wasn’t just those on the screen who were part of the adventure, but the audience as well.

Every additional story and every easter egg further engaged the audience to a level never before seen in cinema. As such, the anticipation and the stakes for Avengers: Endgame were unprecedentedly high.

And if ticket sales are any indication, the investment paid off.

The Light/Dark Dichotemy

What makes Avengers: Endgame–and by that measure, all MCU films–so wonderful, is that they blend the comedy and drama effectively. The light-hearted nature of the dialogue and sight-gags balance well against the high stakes each in each film. The final installment of the third act is no different.

Witty banter overlayed by the weight of the remaining Avenger’s task makes for delightful moments among tragically difficult circumstances. This final installment is more violent and more intense than previous MCU films. But even that violence is still somewhat in keeping with other films. It’s almost always implied instead of directly shown. And each scene is punctuated with a joke.

In this clip, the joke is more of a sight gag. Hawkeye’s hair is hilarious.

I guess we’ll have to wait for the director’s cut to get the truly untamed Avengers.

Final Thoughts

Avengers: Endgame is a great film. It does a wonderful job balancing the humor and tragedy and tells an epic story about good and evil and what some people will sacrifice to do the right thing.
