Does Stan Against Evil Have What it Takes

If you are looking for a new show to enjoy this fall, look no further than IFC’s newest campy horror Stan Against Evil. The story revolves around the sheriffs in a small, New England town. See, back during the witch trials of the 16th century, this small town burned more than their fair share of witches. During one of the burnings, a witch cursed the future sheriffs of the town to die a horrible death.

And since then, that’s what’s happened. Until Stan Miller, that is.

The show follows Stan, the former sheriff of this tiny New England town, as he begrudgingly tries to help the new sheriff survive the horrors of the occult. Here’s a clip of what you can expect from season 1.

My Thoughts

Stan Against Evil is a chemical fire that I can’t seem to stop watching. The jokes are simple but fun. The horror is over the top in a way that removes all fear. The show is campy in the best way. I don’t want to give you the wrong idea; I really like this show. But you need to know what you are walking into when you watch it.

John C. McGinley plays the titular role of Stan Miller. If you want to get a good idea of who Stan is, go and watch a few seasons of Scrubs. McGinley plays Stan the same way he played Dr. Cox in Scrubs. You don’t need to watch more than one episode to get the idea of how he will play the character, but Scrubs was such a good show, I dare you to watch just one episode.

The way McGinley plays Stan might be one of the reasons I enjoy this new show. I liked the character he played back then, so I like the character as he plays it now.

But it’s not just McGinley that I like in the role. His daughter in the show, played by actress Deborah Baker Jr., plays Stan socially inept daughter. Her misadventures in the show help to establish some of the funniest moments in the show. Imagine a Tina Belcher from Bob’s Burgers, but real and having to deal with demons.

We’ve only seen four episodes so far and I am excited for more. This show gets 7 out of 10 bloody chainsaws. Stan Against Evil airs Wednesday nights on IFC or you can buy episodes on Amazon. Have you seen Stan Against Evil yet? Leave a comment below telling me what you thought of the latest episode.
