Agents of SHIELD Recap S4 E05 “Lockup” (Spoilers Ahead)

In this week’s episode of Agents of SHIELD, Robbie Reyes struggles to control his Ghost Rider abilities. Meanwhile, SHIELD decides to infiltrate a high-security prison to attempt to learn more about the secrets surrounding the strange events that have been occurring this season.

Important Things to Know Going Into This Week’s Episode

Coulson told Quake and Ghost Rider last week that, even if they don’t need SHIELD, SHIELD needs them. I’m excited to hopefully see these two fighting alongside SHIELD even more than they did last week. Hopefully, the partnership will help them all figure out what is going on, and stop their enemies before everything gets out of hand.

Simmons has to do frequent lie detector tests with SHIELD, and, last week, she helped Daisy hack SHIELD, then found out about Ghost Rider working with Mack and Coulson, and then learned about Radcliffe’s AI creation. If she does have a lie detector test, she is going to need to figure out a good way to either lie her way out of this, or spin those things in a positive way.

The ghosts are clearly becoming the main story line of this season. They are actively causing trouble, and infecting people in the same way May was infected a few episodes back. I am interested in seeing the explanation of what is causing this, and watching Ghost Rider work to solve this problem alongside SHIELD.

The Biggest Moments in this week’s episode (SPOILERS!)

1. The Darkhold:

This book that so many smart people in the Marvel universe were never able to find is apparently the cause of all of this trouble. It’s definitely terrifying to think about the power of an object that scared even Nick Fury getting loose. Once we know more clearly how everything is connected, it will be awesome to watch.

2. These Ghosts will go after anyone.

It all seems to come back to the Darkhold, that book must have some incredible secrets in order to cause the ghosts to attack anyone that stands in their way of their pursuit. The way that people who have been touched by the ghosts react is more than terrifying, especially because anybody they see is a perceived danger.

3. Watchdog’s Prison Recruiting:

It becomes apparent in this episode that the watchdogs grow their numbers by recruiting imprisoned people to join their fight after release. This seems like a strange, but effective way of getting what they’re searching for. I was really hopeful that Daisy would be able to win the fight herself, but May and Coulson coming in to help at the last minute was definitely a cool moment.

4. Mack’s Gun

Mack’s guns are always so awesome! personally, I don’t like guns, but when it’s on a TV show, I can appreciate the cool and unrealistic guns that the creators are able to put together. I love how Mack’s guns always seem to have some sort of blade on the end. In this episode, it looked like an ax. He was able to use that to help save some prison guards. But there’s no doubt that a gun like that could come in handy in many other ways as well.

5. Simmons and Mace:

The back-and-forth about whether or not he had caught Simmons in a failed lie detector test was great, but the way Simmons got him to revoke her need for a lie detector test was even cooler. It does make me wonder what he has to hide, eventually, I’m sure we’ll learn more about his back story, and figure out exactly what Simmons figured out in this episode.

Ryan’s Speculation of the Week:

Coulson, Mack and the rest of SHIELD are going to have a hard time analyzing Robbie Reyes and his position with them. He is the only one that can stop the ghosts, but he doesn’t seem to be able to control himself when he thinks somebody deserves the wrath of the Ghost Rider. This week, he incinerated a prisoner just because he was a member of the gang that shot his brother, even though he was locked up at the time of the attack. The cherry on top is that the event is going public. I’m not sure they will be able to keep him around when that goes public. So, in the interest of stopping the ghosts, they’ll either need to ignore public perception, or they’ll need to turn away from SHIELD to fight this battle.
