Arrow Recap S5 E05 “Human Target” (Spoilers Ahead)

In this week’s episode of Arrow, Wild Dog has been captured by Tobias Church. Oliver and his team have to find a way to save him, leading Oliver to turn to an old friend for help. Meanwhile, felicity’s new boyfriend joins the ACU, which causes her a considerable amount of internal stress.

Important Things to Know Going Into This Week’s Episode

Diggle is back! Maybe? Possibly… I really don’t know. Oliver rescued Diggle from a military prison last week, and now he will seemingly be a major part of the team again, but he didn’t leave for no reason. There’s no guarantee (or anything close to it) that Diggle will jump back into the vigilante life willingly.

Oliver’s team is taking shape at last. They were incredible when they needed to be last week, even though they didn’t all make it out. This is far from the first time that a member of team Arrow has been captured, and Oliver always has a plan to get them back. Wild Dog will be fine.

Russia is still awesome in Oliver’s flashback storyline. We’re now roughly a quarter of the way through this season of Arrow, and the story of Russia is only going to get better from here. Oliver has a lot of Russian connections, and, up until late last season, was a well-respected member of Bratva. We’ve seen him growing, but not quite to these levels yet. We also can’t forget that there could be an explanation in the flashback of Oliver getting back to the island in time to be “rescued”. We could definitely get some major flashback stories very soon.

The Biggest Moments in this Week’s episode (SPOILERS!)

1. Oliver’s Pursuit:

With Curtis sidelined, it was a three-person search for Rene, and they definitely worked well together in their searching. One strange thing about the teams in the past was the way they worked on their own much of the time. They came together often, especially when it was necessary, but this team seems to really be grasping the teamwork idea, and it can help them to thrive in the future.

2. Church knows a secret:

Rene gave up Oliver’s identity after being tortured. Now, Oliver has to deal with an assassin coming for him. Meanwhile, Church is out there causing a lot of trouble in the city. He could definitely make things difficult for Oliver for a long time if they don’t find a way to keep him quiet. And people don’t just stay quiet in prison.

3. Bratva:

Oliver has always been a great manipulator, and very few can see through that. The fact that there were skeptics in the ranks of Bratva makes it very interesting that he was actually able to survive and keep ties to the group for so long after. It makes sense that it would be hard for people to accept him. He’s an outsider, and an American, joining a Russian mob. He doesn’t exactly fit the bill…

4. The assassination attempt:

Oliver has had many close calls over the years, hell, I’m still not convinced that he didn’t die when he fought Ra’s al Ghul. This was a pretty dark moment, though. It makes sense that Oliver needed to appear dead, but the show did an incredible job of making it look and feel real for a moment. Having the Human Target step in and be Oliver for the day was a good strategy. The mechanics behind it make no sense to me, but it was incredible nevertheless. I’m not sure how I’d feel if a political leader faked being assassinated, but I imagine that Oliver is going to have to deal with a lot of fallout for the stunt, especially from Thea.

5. Will Oliver move on?

He is saying that he will, and, sure, he’ll probably go on a few dates. I don’t think he’s over Felicity, though. He’s going to continue to be hung up on Felicity until he gets another chance or meets someone that can make him move past her. Neither scenario seems particularly likely.

Ryan’s Speculation of the week:

Prometheus is going to be trouble. I don’t know how I ever convinced myself that Tobias Church would be the main villain this season, but Prometheus handled him really easily. I will be overly excited to see anything and everything we are able to learn about Prometheus in the next few weeks.
