Supergirl Recap S2 E01 “The Adventures of Supergirl” (Spoilers Ahead)

In the season premiere, we see Supergirl deal with a villain attacking a major space flight, and a new arrival on earth, seemingly from Krypton. When the attack on the spaceship happens, Superman shows up to help Supergirl save the day and understand what is happening. Meanwhile, Kara is dealing with trying to balance all of the aspects of her life.

Important Things to Know Going Into This Season

1. We’re going to meet Superman!

Almost all of the promotion for this season has been the introduction of Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman. I’m sure he will be an interesting character. This is a Supergirl show, though, so I don’t expect Superman to be a major factor in more than a few episodes this season.

2. Kara & Jimmy:

At the end of last season, we saw this connection finally happen. I wonder what kinks and distractions they will throw into this season as far as this relationship goes.

3. Connection to Arrowverse:

The move to the CW always brought with it the possibility of connections to other DC shows based on that channel. We saw a brief idea of that last season when Barry Allen found his way into Supergirl’s universe. It has already been confirmed that all 4 shows will be involved in a major crossover event in November, but Supergirl will be the only show of the 4 without a dedicated episode for this crossover. Hopefully, we’ll get to see some of the build up to that.

The Biggest Moments in this Week’s Episode (SPOILERS!)

1. Martian Manhunter in his Natural Form:

It’s awesome to see J’onn J’onzz flying around in his martian form helping Kara. The mutual standoffish feeling he and Superman share toward each other was odd, though. I don’t exactly blame Superman, I wouldn’t like the person who kept kryptonite in existence rather than destroying it, if there was an option to destroy it.  I hope that this story develops more over this season.

2. New DEO Office:

This is almost certainly a result of the move to CW & a bigger budget with the renewed season. It was funny to hear the interactions between Kara, Alex, and J’onn though. It’s hilarious to imagine that this building was always there, and they just didn’t know about it.

3. Kara’s New Job:

Kara is clearly struggling to deal with the fact that she actually has options for the first time. I love how this show has shaped Cat Grant as a mentor for Kara. Her advice to “keep diving” seems to be exactly what Kara needed to decide what she was going to do about her new job and her relationship with Jimmy. Seeing her ability as a reporter is going to be an awesome part of this season.

4. The Luthors:

The first mention of Lex Luthor’s sister being involved with the spacecraft that almost crashed made me almost certain that she would be a villain. The fact that she was actually a target, though, was an incredibly cool twist. I think it will be fun to watch as this story line progresses throughout this season.

5. Who is the guy in the pod?

The DEO never really figured out who was in the pod that crash landed on earth. I’m sure this will be an ongoing story this season. I for one, am super excited to see where this goes as the season progresses.

Ryan’s Random Thought:

Tyler Hoechlin was the perfect choice for Superman. Beyond the physical similarities, and the fact that he is an awesome actor, he is not so well known that he alone would be able to overshadow Melissa Benoist. Like I said earlier, this is Supergirl, not a Superman show, so this casting choice was perfect in my opinion. I’m excited to see if and when Hoechlin will return to play Superman this season.
