During Star Wars Celebration, holotable heroes were told that Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes was going to undergo some big changes in the near future. In addition to a new game mode being prepared to launch sometime in the next few months, players should prepare themselves to receive two new characters over the next two months. When we were told that these characters were said to be fan favorites, the forums and fan sites went crazy with speculation. Well, it looks like we are finally going to learn who at least one of these characters will be. The next character SWGOH will introduce is R2-D2.

SWGOH & R2-D2
If you’ve played SWGOH for any length of time, then you know that R2 has already been in the game a few different times. Players can currently battle against the spunky little droid in the up tier Dark Side battles and he was the main opponent during the Chopper event. In both of these areas, players were able to see his abilities in action.
Now, whether or not we get an R2 with the same abilities, only time will tell. But there are a few really important things we know about the droid in the game.
Unlocks at 5-Star
Artoo will unlock as a 5-star character. SO far the only characters in the game that have done that are Yoda, Emperor Palpatine, General Kenobi, and Han Solo. Yoda and EP are both unlocked through special events, while Kenobi and Solo are raid rewards. The question that begs to be asked is will Artoo be a raid reward or launch a new character event?
Both are likely possibilities. We currently only have two character events that operate on a rotating schedule. Throwing a third event in the mix would increase the value of Yoda and the Emperor because it would take more time to get them. And while it’s unlikely that we will get a new character raid, it is possible that we could get a ships raid. This is not something we have seen before and could be a fun new addition to the game. It would also increase the value of the Ships Arena game mode, as players would have to pay more attention to that to be able to participate in the raid.
Galactic Republic
R2 will be one of the most versatile characters in the game. Not only does he have the Droid and Rebel tags, he is also considered Resistance, Support, and will introduce the Galactic Republic tag. This is exciting for a few reasons.
This new tag means that we are going to see other characters added to the group, unless R2 becomes like the Ugnaught who is just an Ugnaught. What is likely to happen is that the Jedi and Clones are likely going to be added to this tag as well.
We have seen so many Rebel and Empire characters added to the game over the last six months. Nearly 2 dozen new characters fall in one of these two categories. With a new tag may come new characters. Could we get Galactic Republic specific characters? Will we see Padme or Jar Jar?
If we get more Galactic Republic characters will we finally see more Separatist characters? I want Droideka. Just saying.
Currently, Artoo is not listed in players’ character profiles so we can’t see exactly what his abilities or stats will be. But it’s Artoo, so it’s likely that he’s going to be a badass. Once we have more information, we will launch a full character bio on the spunky little droid.
