Star Wars Rebels Recap: The Antilles Extraction

There is only so much that a show can do within a half-hour block of time. Tonight’s episode of Star Wars Rebels used every second of their running time to tell a compelling story. The Antilles Extraction showed viewers how the hotshot pilot, Wedge Antilles, joined the rebellion. The episode starts with Commander Sato receiving intel from an undercover agent. The intel indicates that there are imperial pilots who want to defect and join the rebellion. Ezra volunteers to go undercover as an imperial recruit. Sato decides that Sabine is less recognizable and should therefore be the one to go.

The remainder of the episode revolves around Sabine making contact with the new imperial defectors and smuggling them to freedom.

The Dread Pirate Fulcrum

As I mentioned before, Commander Sato received intel from an agent in the field. What I didn’t mention was that specific agent went by the codename Fulcrum. As you may remember, Ahsoka went by the name Fulcrum. As you may also remember, she is dead right now, probably (too soon??).

Turns out, Fulcrum is just a code name all rebel spies use. So if one is captured, the legacy can live on, much like the Dread Pirate Roberts.

But this leaves us with the question, who is the new Fulcrum? I have my theories.

A Debt Paid

Sabine and the imperial defector’s first attempt to flee is not as successful as they would like. It’s not successful at all, and they are captured. After their capture, they are brought to the presence of Governor Arihnda Pryce and Agent Kallus. There is a moment when Kallus purposefully ignores Sabine’s true identity.

This seems odd since he spent the first full season chasing her and the ghost crew. He would have been well aware of who she was even with her new goth look (She has black hair, just black hair). So why would Agent Kallus withhold information?

We see the obvious answer later in the episode when he helps Sabine and the two defectors escape. When Sabine asks why he is helping them, he tells her that he owes Zeb. For this to make sense, see season 2 episode 16.

But that is too on the nose. My theory: after the events on S2:E16, Kallus realizes his place in the Empire and doesn’t like it. He turns informant and become the new Fulcrum.

The Fall of Ezra

It is my belief that season three of Rebels will focus on Ezra’s turn to the dark side. As an orphan, the only family the young Jedi has is the ghost crew, and to a smaller extent, the rebellion. Ezra has become so attached to his adopted family that he refuses to let anything bad happen to them. Like Anakin, he is letting his attachments drive him to anger. And we all know where anger leads.

Tonight we saw Ezra risk his life, and the lives of others to save Sabine. It took the firm hand of his master to get him to leave a dangerous situation to save the lives of the people on board. I don’t want to give too much away, but when you watch the episode, you will see what I am talking about.

Who are Vult Skerris and Hobbie?

There are two characters in tonight’s that seem like they are not just one-and-done characters. The first is Vult Skerris. From what I could gather during the episode, Vult was a tie fighter pilot instructor and he was a bad dude. Maybe it was his mustache. His mustache made his seem creepy.

But creepy mustache aside, Skerris proves he is a force to be reckoned with when he nearly destroys Sabine and the other dissidents as they flee for the second time.

The other character that seems to much of a background character to not pay a ton of attention to is Hobbie. Clearly, Hobbie is not his real name. So what is it? Like Wedge, Hobbie is a fighter ace, skilled at flying. I fully believe he is going to be revealed to be more than just a background character. Maybe he is Kes Dameron, Poe’s daddy.
