Recap for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S4 E01 “The Ghost” (Heavy Spoilers Ahead)

Important Things to Know Going Into This Season’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

1. Daisy isn’t working with S.H.I.E.L.D.

In the final moments of season 3, we saw Mack and Coulson tracking Daisy/Quake. Just as they were closing in, she used her powers to escape at the last moment. All signs point to her not agreeing with the direction of S.H.I.E.L.D.

2. Coulson isn’t the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. anymore.

Also, in those final moments we hear Coulson mention “The Director”. The theory is that since S.H.I.E.L.D. is back in the public eye, and Coulson is supposed to be dead, someone else is the acting direcrtor. Because of this, I expect we’ll get to see him in the field this season almost exclusively.

3. The Ghost Rider is being introduced.

This won’t be Johnny Blaze (The Ghost Rider from the Nicolas Cage movies). No, this time, we’re seeing Robbie Reyes. I don’t know much about him, but he looks like he’ll be awesome.

The Biggest Moments in this weeks episode (SPOILERS!)

1. May is at odds with the S.H.I.E.L.D. leadership… including Simmons.

May does not agree with the new director. Nobody seems to. We hear almost every main character complain about everything being “classified”, or that things aren’t the same.

Simmons, on the other hand, is an assistant to the director, and I’m not sure what her end game is. It seems like she wanted to just learn more, but a tense discussion with May leads me to believe she has lost sight of that. I guess we’ll see what her story holds this season.

2. Radcliffe made a really creepy synthetic human.

We all know that Radcliffe is crazy. He showed us that, and then some, last season. But creating a synthetic human takes that crazy to a different level. I loved Fitz’ reactions to this “person”, though. He definitely wasn’t expecting to see a naked woman in that house. The mention of Ultron was really funny too. I  wasn’t expecting that at all.

It will be interesting to see if Fitz can keep that secret from Simmons and S.H.I.E.L.D. for long. Hopefully, when it all does come out, it doesn’t cause too big of an issue.

3. Yo-Yo is going behind his fellow agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s back to help Daisy.

It’s good to see that even though her team went their separate ways at the end of last season, Daisy still keeps in touch. Here’s hoping we’ll see Joey Gutierrez sometime this season! I liked that Yo-Yo wanted to help Daisy and let her know that Coulson & Mack still believe in her. I hope Daisy understands that before it’s too late.

Also with Yo-Yo, it was nice to see her interaction with Mack. We all saw their chemistry last season, and their exchange tonight only made it more obvious that they should get together. Yo-Yo said as much when she asked Mack if he was going to ask her out. Hopefully, we’ll see that progress as the season goes on.

4. Ghost Rider is maybe not all bad?

During his altercation with Quake, we hear him justify the murders of everyone he has killed. When she says that he can’t choose who lives and who dies, he says that he doesn’t choose. Then, we see him with his little brother, who happens to be in a wheelchair. I don’t know if they’re setting him up to be the sympathetic villain or an ally who needs to get over a hurdle before he can help. Either way, I’m excited to see how his story progresses. Especially because the show is being re-branded this season completely around his character.

5. Who is the new director?

We never see the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D. We never even hear a name mentioned. None of the characters say anything to help us know who the new director is. A part of me thinks that this season will have us all hating the new director. Maybe “The Director” will even become the villain for this season that Quake and the ghost rider have to take down.

Ryan’s Random Thought:

Ghost Rider is freaking awesome! I knew that his character would be cool, this was far from a secret, but I wasn’t really prepared for him. The way he fought Quake, and then transformed right in front of her was seriously awesome! I’m sure we’ll see his character progress even more in this season and beyond.
