DC TV Shows on the CW Recap for 5/8-5/10

When James finds a scared boy at the Alien’s address, it becomes clear that he is the only hope to save National City. On The Flash, Barry does whatever it takes to stop Savitar. Meanwhile, HR tries to convince Tracy to create her trap for Savitar and Killer Frost has a proposal for the team. Oliver is forced to release criminals prosecuted by Adrian Chase, on Arrow. Meanwhile, a corpse stuck in concrete is delivered to his office.

Important Things to Know This Week:

On the last episode of Supergirl, Lena decided to work with Rhea. She doesn’t know who Rhea is, but we know that once that comes out it is going to be a really big story. We also are waiting to see who the main villain is going to be in this season. It could be Cadmus still, although that story would really need to ramp up, but if we see any more of Rhea’s story this week, it could definitely set her up as the main villain moving forward.

Last week, we learned of Savitar’s identity. Now that we know that he is Barry in the future, a lot of questions come up. Will he tell the team? If he does, what will happen? Back in the beginning of the season, everyone had vastly different reactions to Flashpoint. It’s not going to be easy to deal with this new revelation. The team still needs to find a way to stop Savitar, though.

Last week, Oliver and Felicity had to find a way to escape the bunker after Chase trapped them inside. They were able to escape in time, but Chase is still out there. As the last episode ended, Chase was talking to Oliver’s son…

The Biggest Moments This Week (Spoilers!):

Supergirl: (S2 E20: City of Lost Children)

The main story this week revolves around an attack by a Phorian, an Alien with telekinetic abilities. Phorian’s generally will not use their powers in an act of malice, according to J’onn. This leads to a lot of questions about why this happened, if it will happen again, and what they can do to stop it. Beyond any of that though, they will need to find her. If they find her, they can figure out the answers to their questions and ensure the safety of the city.

Early on, James is down on himself because a girl he saves is terrified of him. He tells Winn that it has been happening a lot, and everything that happens makes it seem like he is doubting himself. This perfectly sets up the connection he forms with Marcus, the boy he finds at the Phorian’s apartment. James takes Marcus under his wing when Alex realizes he is the only one who has a chance of getting anything out of him. The two bond, and they have a good time together. unfortunately, he then starts using his powers, and causes a lot of damage at CatCo. After the attack, James isn’t sure that he can continue helping the DEO. J’onn convinces him to stay and help, and I think it’s a big moment for him.

I was worried we wouldn’t see the Rhea/Lena story this week, and I’m glad I was wrong. It is interesting to see the way that relationship is forming. Rhea is acting like a mother-figure to Lena. If things continue to progress the way they are, it could lead to a very difficult position for Lena to have to take. Ignoring that, the two of them test out their new “portal” in this episode. One is off-screen, and one is shown. In both instances we see a Phorian attack. It becomes clear that it is the testing of the portal that is causing the unusual attacks. When the team at the DEO pieces this together, Kara reaches out to Lena, and she ends up learning about Rhea’s involvement instead.

The Flash: (S3 E21: Cause and Effect)

Savitar reveals himself as a time remnant from the future that became an outcast from the team, so he knows everything that the team is going to try to do to stop him, but he isn’t technically Barry. He ends up deciding that he will need to do anything he can to potentially stop Savitar. Then, Cisco comes up with a way to block out Barry’s future memories. However, it backfires, and causes amnesia. This does cause Savitar to forget everything as well. Even so, Cisco and Julian need to work to get Barry back to normal.

HR is developing a relationship with Tracy. It definitely feels cheesy and over-the-top, but it is a nice draw away from the seriousness of the story. I’m not sure what will end up happening, but I could definitely see a number of stories playing out because of it. Regardless of what happens in the future, there are important things to do in the present. Tracy needs to build her machine, so they can trap Savitar.

Killer Frost helping the team does a lot. It leads to the potential for Wally to regain his powers, but would also puts iris’ life in danger, restore Savitar, and put the team back to square one. In addition to that, it helps Cisco have a chance to try and break through to her. When Barry finally does get his memories back, it puts the story back on track, but, with only two episodes left, there are still a lot of questions that need to be answered this season.

Arrow: (S5 E21: Honor Thy Fathers)

I was terrified about the possibility that the body delivered to Oliver’s office would be William. It’s still terrible that a body was delivered at all, but it could have been a lot worse. The body ends up having evidence on it which suggests that Oliver’s father may have murdered this man. Oliver refuses to believe that, but Thea (She’s back!) argues that it definitely could be true. The sibling disagreement is interesting, but ultimately just a way to bring Thea into the story.

I like that we are seeing the flashback of Oliver going back to Lian Yu. The flashbacks in this show have made it seem like this show has been going for much more than five seasons. Watching the point where the flashbacks meet the premier of the show pulls everything full-circle. I think this story is important because it shows how much of a connection Oliver has to Anatoly. One of the mysteries of the show has been Oliver’s hate for people who do “evil” things, while being friends with the Bratva. Knowing that Anatoly helped him to get back to “Starling” City makes everything more understandable.

Meanwhile, one of the criminals prosecuted by Chase  is out, and he steals some chemicals necessary to carry out the plan that Chase’ father had before Oliver killed him. The team now has to keep an eye on what is happening with that to ensure that this situation doesn’t get even worse. Meanwhile, Thea watches the video Chase got to them, and forces Oliver to watch it. It creates indisputable proof that Robert Queen did kill the man, which naturally has a huge effect on Oliver. This culminates in the fight with Chase. Oliver wins for the first time by attacking him mentally, and by keeping some level of faith in his Father, where Chase wouldn’t be able to relate.

Overall:

The ending of Supergirl this week was one of the strongest moments I’ve seen out of any of these shows this season. James found a way to stand his ground and do whatever he could to save Marcus and all of the other Phorians. Meanwhile, Rhea puts her plan into action, disabling Kara, J’onn, and Lena in the process. This causes Mon-El to have to make a decision between saving earth and trusting his mother. He tries to stop her, but he, understandably, can’t pull the trigger to kill her, and Rhea’s army of Daxamites make it to Earth to claim it as “New Daxam”.

There was an important moment in “The Flash” that made me think about Killer Frost in a new light. I’ve been bugged by the fact that Killer Frost is inherently evil despite Caitlin not being evil. When Cisco was talking about an experience with Ronnie, though, Caitlin is visibly disturbed by it. I think it’s entirely possible that her meta-human powers cause her to be numb to the good things in her life, as a result of the incredible pain she has experienced. If this is true, the team might be able to find a way to help her overcome that.

Ryan’s Speculation of the week:

With Chase in ARGUS custody, there is a question of what will happen with the final two episodes of the season. There is a very good chance Chase will escape, and that we will see him stronger than ever. I believe that we will see Vigilante return to the city, though. Maybe he’ll help Chase escape, or maybe he will hellp fight Chase. I read one rumor that Vigilante is actually Billy Malone, and that his death was a hoax. Whatever happens will be very interesting.

Supergirl airs on Mondays, The Flash airs on Tuesdays, and Arrow airs on Wednesdays on the CW. Leave a comment and let me know what you thought about this week’s slate of episodes.
