DC TV Shows on the CW Recap for 3/21-3/22

The legends land in World War I France and get J.R.R. Tolkien to help them locate the Spear of Destiny. Meanwhile, Prometheus does everything in his power to destroy Oliver.

Important Things to Know This Week:

Supergirl and Flash had a special musical crossover this week. Go check out my post about that event.

Now that all of the pieces of the Spear of Destiny have been found, somebody is going to put it together. That might be the Legends, or it might be the Legion. Either way, we could very well see the spear in action this week, and that would be awesome!

I mentioned wanting to avoid spoiling anything about the awesome episode of Arrow last week. Hopefully, by now, anybody reading this has seen the episode already. We should keep in mind that Adrian Chase has been doing everything in his power to discredit and undermine Oliver, that will factor into this week heavily. We should also keep in mind Felicity’s relationship with Helix, and how it is becoming increasingly toxic.

The Biggest Moments This Week (Spoilers!):

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: (S2 E15: Fellowship of the Spear)

Connecting the Spear of Destiny is a significant moment in the course of this show. Last season, the Legends fought in some very unlikely scenarios. The Spear of Destiny, though, arguably contains more power than anything that has been seen in the Arrowverse to this point. There is clearly a danger to it though. Amaya, Mick, and Sara all have very real reasons to want to use the Spear of Destiny.

The Legion bringing Snart in to the group completely alters the story. Mick hasn’t seen Snart in a long time, and he thinks he is just seeing things again. Unfortunately, he doesn’t realize that Snart is actually real, and, instead of speaking to his own subconscious, he is actually revealing their plan to the Legion of Doom.

J.R.R. Tolkien’s help is infinitely important in this episode. Without his research and knowledge, the Legends would have no chance in their mission this week. Unfortunately, the Legion is right behind them, and everything goes to hell. The Waverider gets hit, the vial of the blood of Christ gets destroyed. Now, the Legion of Doom has the Spear of Destiny and the season finale next week will be much more interesting because of it.

Arrow: (S5 E17: Kapiushon)

Oliver is still in Adrian’s captivity, and he truly is torturing Oliver in every way he knows possible in order to break him. The crazy part of Prometheus’ motivation is that this is supposed to be revenge for Oliver killing his father. I get that Oliver’s killing back in season 1 is universally looked at negatively now, and obviously a family member of one of his victims would be very upset about that time period. Adrian has to realize that his father was a terrible person, though. Adrian is a sociopath, though.

We finally get the Russia-heavy story in this episode. There are a few key points of interest in this story. The first highlight, of course, is the fact that Malcolm Merlyn was in Russia as the same time as Oliver, and that he was meeting with the same people that Oliver was working around at this time. This definitely has to connect, in some way, to the season 1 plot where Merlyn is the main villain. The second significant moment is Oliver torturing, and apparently mutilating, a man for information and “for practice”. We know that Oliver hated the person he was back in season 1, and this definitely helps to explain why. We also see the fulfillment of this promise to Taiana, back in season 4, and Anatoly refers back to the time he and Oliver spent together on Lian Yu back in season 2.

Overall:

Adrian’s success in breaking Oliver, and getting him to admit that he enjoyed killing the people he has killed is an incredibly significant moment. Especially when you consider that the flashback portion of the episode clearly spells out that Oliver is not killing out of necessity, but out of desire. The problem is that Oliver did change between the time in Russia, and the time he puts on the hood back in Starling City. Oliver is also bound to admit whatever Adrian wants him to admit to escape the pain that he is experiencing. With that being said, I do think that Oliver is going to use this experience, and his memories of Russia, to reflect on his life again, like he did at the end of Season 1.

Now that Oliver is back with the team, though, I think they know Adrian’s weakness. He thinks he knows Oliver better than Oliver knows himself, and he may be right, but he doesn’t know the rest of the team, and they aren’t going to stop fighting.

Ryan’s Speculation of the week:

I’m not opposed to arguing that Legends of Tomorrow is the most entertaining of the four shows. At the very least, it has the most interesting and compelling cast. It hasn’t had as much success in substance, though. Every other show has put together at least one, and usually more, episodes that easily stand out as an amazing episode for the shared universe. Legends has not done that yet, but I think they will in next week’s season finale. As I stated before, the Spear of Destiny is more powerful than anything we’ve seen, and, in the hands of the wrong people, it’s going to be nearly impossible to stop them. Combine that with the inevitability of Thawne having to deal with the fact that he doesn’t actually exist, and we have all of the makings for a truly incredible episode.

Supergirl airs on Mondays, The Flash & Legends of Tomorrow air on Tuesdays, and Arrow airs on Wednesdays on the CW. Leave a comment and let me know what you thought about this week’s slate of episodes.
