DC TV Shows on the CW Recap for 11/20-21

This was a short, but huge week in the DC TV shows. On Supergirl, Jimmy/Guardian has to try to clear his name when he is blamed for a murder committed by another Vigilante. Meanwhile, Supergirl goes to save Mon-El from Cadmus, and, while there, has to fight Cyborg Superman. On The Flash, Caitlin’s Killer Frost powers come out completely, and the team has to manage that situation. However, Caitlin isn’t the only one with a secret…

Important Things to Know This Week:

In Supergirl, it’s important to remember the fluctuating state of the majority of the characters. Mon-El is still trying to find his place on Earth (providing that he can escape Cadmus. Winn and Jimmy are adjusting to playing this new vigilante/hero role. Alex is still struggling with her romantic feelings. Lastly, J’onn just received an infusion of White Martian blood, rather than the Green Martian blood that everyone thought he was getting. Keep an eye on all of these stories as well as the way Kara (the main character) balances it all as a part of her complicated life.

There are only 3 things I have on my mind for The Flash:

  1. Does Wally have his powers now?
  2. Will Caitlin be able to control her powers
  3. Is Julian Alchemy?

Beyond that, everything else is just a side story, at least for now.

Arrow & DC’s Legends of Tomorrow are taking this week off.

The Biggest Moments This Week (Spoilers!):

Supergirl: (S2 E07: The Darkest Place)

Guardian is definitely going to have a tough time with this new vigilante running around. Fans of this universe will recognize this theme from what we’ve seen in Arrow. Jimmy and Winn needed to find a way to stop or expose this new guy or they would have never cleared Guardian’s name. Telling Alex who Guardian was definitely was a bad move by Winn, though. I don’t think that will turn out well.

Supergirl’s fight in Cadmus was interesting. I liked the use of the appearance of Hank Henshaw/J’onn J’onzz as a way to drum up suspense, create a question of his blood transfusion, and confuse the audience. When I initially heard that the episode would feature “Cyborg Superman”, but then I saw that Tyler Hoechlin wasn’t in the cast, I figured that it would be some robotic creation that only shared uniform colors or a general body shape with superman. Having the cyborg infused with Hank Henshaw’s body was very unexpected. Then, Jeremiah Danvers shows up to save the day, which beautifully advanced one of the plots for this season.

The subplots in this episode were incredibly entertaining. I like this show, but this was the first time all season that I felt like I needed to watch everything that was happening. J’onn’s developing reaction toward the white martian blood was expected, but not quite to this extent. I definitely didn’t expect the confrontation between him and M’gann either. I loved the Alex and Maggie scenes as well. It perfectly highlighted the way that a relationship like that can become complicated.

The Flash: (S3 E07: Killer Frost)

Savitar is a beast! His comment to Barry about being a God was immediately followed up by him moving so fast that even Barry couldn’t comprehend it. It actually seemed like they were teleporting because they were going so fast. Each season has brought a new, seemingly unbeatable, speedster, something tells me that we haven’t seen the last of Savitar.

This episode, and the whole Killer Frost plot creates a new question about the way meta-human powers work. Everything we’ve seen in the past suggests that it is the person, not the power that determines whether they are good or bad. We saw it when Ronnie/Firestorm switches from bad to good. We saw it when Cisco and Ronnie were villains on Earth-2, despite being good people/meta-humans on Earth-1. Most notably, we saw it when Edward Clariss, Eobard Thawn, and Hunter Zolomon were evil speedsters while Jay Garrick, Jesse Wells, Wally West and Barry Allen have been speedsters on the good side. Caitlin, on the other hand, gets her Killer Frost powers, and she becomes evil. She should have remained a good person based on what we’ve seen in the past.

Barry and Cisco were finally back on good terms, but the revelation that Flashpoint changed the fate of Dante destroyed that. Cisco had an interesting story in this episode. It can’t be easy to learn that one of your best friends ’caused’ your brother’s death, and then immediately have to fight another one of your best friends as she tries to kill you. The fact that he was even able to make it through the stuff that happened in this episode is a testament to what he can do.

Overall:

I’m going to focus on The Flash here, not that Supergirl didn’t have stuff to talk about, I mentioned above that it was the best episode of Supergirl this season, it just happened to be the second best episode this week for two major reasons

Barry realized how his actions, and their subsequent consequences, have been seriously affecting his friends. Like Oliver realized in Arrow, being a hero isn’t only about saving the day or stopping the bad guy. People look up to you, and people put their lives on hold to help you. Those people need to be considered, or it can cause problems, and they may not always see things the same way. Hopefully this can help him mend some of the damaged relationships.

Wally is now officially a speedster. It was speculated, maybe even expected, when the character was introduced. Prior to this season, it was teased, and even included in Flashpoint. The rest of the season has built towards it, now we get to see what happens. He could still be in danger of Alchemy’s influence, or he could end up being the perfect ally of Barry. Either way, Kid Flash is here!

Ryan’s Speculation of the week:

I really quickly want to flash back to my prediction last week. Told you so.

This week’s prediction is going to be about the crossover next week. I think we’re going to see some incredible interactions. Kara and Oliver. Cisco and Nate. Mick and Kara. The list goes on, I couldn’t possibly name all of the interactions, team-ups, fights and everything else we’re bound to get next week. It would be better if they weren’t fighting strange aliens, but it’s going to be very good anyway.

Supergirl airs on Mondays, The Flash airs on Tuesdays, Arrow airs on Wednesdays, and Legends of Tomorrow airs on Thursdays on the CW. Leave a comment and let me know what you thought about this week’s slate of episodes.
