Agents of SHIELD Recap S4 E13 “BOOM” (Spoilers Ahead)

While the team tries to contain a new explosive inhuman, Coulson and Mack find Radcliffe’s inspiration for Aida.

Important Things to Know Going Into This Week’s Episode

There is a lot of stuff happening in this show right now. Radcliffe still has May trapped, and now he is working closely with the Watchdogs. Speaking of the Watchdogs, Senator Nadeer is still causing trouble, and the tension is certainly high after Coulson broke into her office. Tensions are growing between the Watchdogs and SHIELD, and that will likely come up very soon.

The Biggest Moments in this Week’s Episode (SPOILERS!)

1. Radcliffe & the Watchdogs:

I don’t know what was more terrifying; Aida creating a world for May, Anton reading the Darkhold, or Radcliffe having a hyper-developed set of Terrigen Crystals. I previously questioned whether that alliance would work, but Radcliffe seems to only care about who is helping him, this group is very terrifying. Shockley becoming an inhuman throws a wrench into everything. This could lead to an internal conflict in the group that may help SHIELD to take it down. We saw some cracks in the group toward the end of the episode, who knows.

2. Mack & Coulson:

The tag-team goes to find Radcliffe’s inspiration for Aida. They are seeking out answers for what Radcliffe is doing, and why he has made those choices. There is a fundamental difference between the way Coulson and Mack approach the situation after learning about Agnes’ brain tumor and desire to avoid Radcliffe. Neither of them is exactly right or wrong. Ultimately, though, they miscalculated how easily Radcliffe would be able to convince Agnes to follow him.

3. Team SHIELD

I loved Mace’s football team analogies as he saw himself seemingly go from “Head Coach”, to “Quarterback”, to “Bench-Warmer”, to “Team Mascot”. For the most part, Mace has been a great addition to the team, even though he has filled several roles. What he fails to understand is that the best members of a team are not only able, but willing to fill whatever role is required of them. As the episode progressed, he seems to realize that his mistakes aren’t the end of the world. Hopefully he can take that and fully accept his role as a team player in future episodes, if he ever escapes from the Watchdogs.

Ryan’s Speculation of the week:

This felt like a filler episode, and, in the past, Agents of SHIELD has jumped back from filler episodes with some amazing stuff. I’m guessing next week will either focus on minor advancements of several plots in the series, or that it will focus heavily on advancing 1-2 major plots. Either way, we may be in for one of the best episodes of the season.
