In the return of Agents of SHIELD, Coulson and May are starting to grow closer, but Coulson doesn’t realize that May might not be who she seems. Meanwhile, Aida is desperate to find the Darkhold again. Keep reading for more.

Important Things to Know Going Into This Week’s Episode

When we last saw the Agents of SHIELD, a lot of things were happening to set up the back half of the season. There are three main storylines to keep track of as the season continues to progress.

The first is the effect the Darkhold had on Aida. The team didn’t think it would affect her because she isn’t actually human, but as we all saw, it clearly affected her more than they thought. The second will be the inhuman conflict. Now that Mace has publicly declared himself to be inhuman, The Watchdogs are only going to fight harder, and I’m sure the anti-inhuman forces won’t stop there. Lastly, I’m interested in seeing what, if anything, is in store for Robbie Reyes in the back half of the season. It did look like Robbie didn’t make it in his fight against Eli, but I’m not ready to accept that just yet.

The Biggest Moments in this Week’s Episode (SPOILERS!)

1. The New Inhuman:

The inhuman Simmons examined being related to Senator Nadeer was expected from the first sight of the “cocoon”, but I didn’t realize it would be her brother. This definitely changes the dynamic of things, as Nadeer is one of the leading anti-inhuman faces in the country. Vijay’s story would have been very interesting. Instead, we see Nadeer’s ruthlessness. Her ability to kill her own brother, just because he is inhuman, definitely sets her up as a great villain.

2. Aida Fights Back:

Aida’s recognition of what was happening when Fitz and Radcliffe show up, along with her ability to absolutely dominate multiple SHIELD agents, was amazing. The way the Darkhold affected her is very interesting when the fact that she isn’t even a human is considered. She definitely had the potential to be the biggest threat the team has ever faced. Luckily, quick-thinking by Mack put a quick end to that possibility. At least until we see that this has all been a part of the plan between Radcliffe and his A.I. creations.

3. A team that trusts…

Mace’s decisions to take Simmons and Daisy along to find, and save, Vijay, is interesting to say the least. Daisy has trouble trusting SHIELD, and she is unlikely to start trusting them too quickly. Simmons, meanwhile, just went through some major events that had to shake her trust in the organization, and in Mace. The new director of SHIELD has a unique view of team building, and taking these two on this mission is a good way of putting that to the test. Getting to watch them take on Senator Nadeer and Watchdog is definitely a positive as well.

Ryan’s Speculation of the week:

The team has struggled in the past to fight two separate enemies. They generally need to all work together in order to truly make it work. There’s a possibility that the team will be forced to choose which war they fight. Maybe they choose to fight Radcliffe and his A.I., and that forces Daisy and the other inhumans to come together in the fight against the Watchdogs. That could be a great way to transition to the new Inhumans show that will come out next fall.
