Agents of SHIELD Recap S4 E06 “The Good Samaritan” (Spoilers Ahead)

In this week’s episode of Agents of SHIELD, Robbie Reyes’ origin story is detailed. We learn the story behind the Ghost Rider, as we also watch Coulson and his team experience a serious danger.

Important Things to Know Going Into This Week’s Episode

Simmons was able to get around her lie detector test, but there are still secrets. Mace already knows about Quake and Ghost Rider working with Coulson, so it might not be a huge deal, but when he learns about Radcliffe’s AI creation, I can’t imagine he’ll take it well.

Meanwhile, SHIELD is going to have to decide what to do about Quake and Ghost Rider. Neither of the two is exactly what SHIELD is looking for in allies, but they may not have a choice but to work with them, at least until this threat is neutralized.

Watchdog isn’t going away either. Mace revealing that he is inhuman will, undoubtedly, cause some sort of attack. Watchdog wants to be rid of inhumans, they will hate the idea that a government leader happens to be one.

The Biggest Moments in this Week’s Episode (SPOILERS!)

1. The Flashback:

Before becoming a creepy ghost, Lucy Bauer and her husband were able to create a machine that was able to create matter out of nothing. They were only able to do this with the help of the Darkhold. It clearly left a strange side effect on Joseph Bauer. Now Lucy wants Eli(Ghost Rider’s uncle) to recreate the experiment in the hope that it will restore her body to it’s normal state. I’m not sure it will work exactly like that, but Eli definitely lost control back then, and now he has lost control again.

2. Mace’s Investigation:

Coulson and Mace definitely have different points of view when it comes to right and wrong. They are obviously both partially right and partially wrong because nothing is black and white. We are watching more from Coulson’s perspective though, so of course we have to see it from his side in terms of the narrative. Coulson cares about the endgame more than the way he gets there. Mace wants to do everything exactly by the book. If Mace gets his way, though,  Quake and Ghost Rider will be imprisoned, at the least. So, when it did come to that moment, the fact that SHIELD and Mace couldn’t do anything to stop Ghost Rider, was actually really incredible.

3. The Second Flashback:

We got to watch the attack on Robbie and Gabe. We saw the aftermath of the crash, and the moment that the Reyes brothers were sure they were dead. Then, we saw Robbie die, and get his chance to sell his soul to live, and become the Ghost Rider. Gabe definitely wasn’t happy to hear it, though. He wasn’t just going to accept Robbie’s explanations as to why he killed people. The reveal that the gang was hired by Joseph Bauer to take out Eli Morrow was definitely unexpected. It doesn’t make things better, and, if anything, gives Robbie a new target.

4. Agent Carter tie-in:

I was as upset as anybody when Agent Carter was cancelled from ABC’s lineup. This was an awesome tie-in to season 2 of the short-lived show. The Zero Matter that Peggy and her friends encountered was an incredibly awesome story-line. That stuff was incredibly dangerous and destructive though. If this story is similar to that, it could have disastrous consequences for everybody.

5. An ominous cliffhanger

The episode ended with a blast going through the compound. We then see the locations where Coulson and Fitz had been inside the facility, and they can’t be seen. Lastly, Eli emerges from the machine, and now has the ability to create matter… Leaving us to wait 4 weeks to see what happens next.

Ryan’s Speculation of the week:

Coulson and Fitz very well could be ghosts now. We only know of it affecting the individuals who were trapped in those containers last time, but we don’t know if other people were in the facility that time or not, and, this time, the power was much higher. Ghost Rider was an invaluable asset, because he is able to stop the ghosts, that’s not what the team will want now, though. This could very easily create a shift in the dynamic between Ghost Rider and SHIELD, as he could easily side with his uncle from here on out.
